VOLT X / ELECTRICAL ESTIMATING

Hiring an Electrical Estimator vs. Outsourcing in Calgary

FIELD NOTES / CALGARY / GROWING CONTRACTOR

The useful comparison is between two ways of handling the same work. Build your decision around your own Calgary tender pipeline, employment costs, document quality and review requirements; a generic salary figure or advertised takeoff fee will not answer it.

  1. Define an equivalent Calgary work package

Choose a representative tenant improvement or other actual opportunity. Identify tenant versus base-building systems, drawing issues, alternates and the deliverables your reviewer needs. Calgary’s electrical-permit guidance is a useful prompt for clarifying boundaries; it is not a substitute for the project documents.

  2. Build the internal-cost side from your figures

Include compensation, recruiting, benefits, estimating software, supervision, training and coverage for absences. Track how much time the role would spend estimating versus gathering information or supporting delivery. No local salary or productivity assumption is required to complete this comparison.

  3. Build the service-cost side from a scoped proposal

Ask for a quotation covering the same drawing set, quantity/pricing scope and review cycle. Include your internal coordination time, change work and supplier-quote handling. A takeoff-only price is not comparable to a fully costed estimate with multiple alternates.

  4. Keep local pricing and project execution explicit

Record material supplier inputs, labour assumptions, occupied-space restrictions and quote validity. Do not assume an outside estimator has your negotiated supplier pricing or knows the shutdown plan. Assign someone within your company to approve these inputs under either staffing model.

  5. Test quiet, typical and peak workloads

Compare how each model handles a small pipeline and several overlapping bids. Confirm any monthly capacity commitment, scheduling procedure and revision entitlement in writing. Budget for a named final reviewer regardless of who prepares the estimate.

  6. Consider a measured hybrid transition

Start with a defined outsourced package or overflow alongside an internal estimator, then review coordination effort and quality of the handoff. If considering dedicated Xkey AiE accounts, confirm eligibility and technical implementation separately. A direct subscription transition is contractual and conditional, not automatic.
