Outsourcing Electrical Estimating: A Guide for Alberta Contractors
FIELD NOTES / ALBERTA / OWNER / ESTIMATING MANAGER
Start outsourcing with a specific problem to solve: measurement, cost development, bid review or a recurring workload. This guide helps Alberta contractors define that assignment while keeping local project requirements and final bid responsibility visible.
Choose a task with a clear acceptance test
For a takeoff, agree the systems, units and quantity breakdown. For a full estimate, also define pricing sources, labour assumptions, allowances and exclusions. Review support needs a named set of documents and questions. This makes proposals comparable and gives your reviewer something concrete to check.
Collect Alberta-specific project inputs
Use the exact project location and document issue. Alberta’s official electrical-code page and the relevant municipality’s guidance help the project team identify requirements. Ask Calgary teams about base-building/tenant boundaries and Edmonton teams about City/EPCOR interfaces where relevant, without assuming either city’s process applies elsewhere.
Keep commercial decisions with an assigned owner
Decide who obtains supplier quotations, approves labour assumptions and applies overhead, contingency and markup. Document those responsibilities before work begins. An external estimate should support your tender decision rather than silently substitute generic inputs for your company’s execution plan.
Agree document sharing and change handling
Begin with a project summary. Arrange a secure method for drawings/specifications and confirm the current revision list. Define confidentiality, authorized access and the process for addenda. The service agreement should distinguish corrections from additional work caused by changed scope or documents.
Compare project support with a monthly arrangement
Occasional work may suit a fixed project quotation. Recurring workloads may justify defined monthly capacity and a work-allocation process. Compare representative project volume and your review effort; no unlimited estimating capacity, guaranteed turnaround or universal savings is implied.
Plan an internal-team pathway only after verification
VOLT X uses Xkey AiE software to prepare electrical estimates. For certain contracts, a client may request a separate Xkey AiE account for access to its estimating work and a later transfer. Where the contract includes this arrangement, VOLT X holds the account and pays the monthly subscription as part of the services agreement until transfer is requested. Client access, the transfer process, subscription responsibility and project-record handling are defined in the contract and applicable Xkey AiE terms.
Prepare the brief with current project information.
The guidance above applies these official resources to estimating preparation; it is not a permit determination, design certification or a claim of a local VOLT X office.
